One in a Million

15 years ago today (August 25th) we lost Aaliyah. One of my all-time favourite singers and style icons, I will be paying tribute with some outfits inspired by the ultimate baby girl.

So, you may recognize my first look, which was inspired by the outfit seen in the music video for Try Again. While it's a hard choice (all of her outfits were faultless), this look is a personal favourite. When it came to style, Aaliyah had the perfect mix between tomboy and girly, and this outfit highlights that - there were the chunky boots and baggy pants mixed with a rhinestone bra, choker and belt.

My last looks were inspired by Aaliyah's casual outfits. In some ways, her style was similar to artists such as Missy Elliott and TLC, who often opted for baggy sportswear, and in a way 'shunned' the overly risqué style that other female hip-hop artists were wearing at the time (e.g. Lil Kim and Foxy Brown). Some staple items for this look would include sports bras and boxer briefs, crop-tops, baggy jeans (worn out and distresses), track pants, oversized jackets and sports jerseys.
