Songs with Substance 1 (Part One)

Hey guys! ♥

To start off this series, I thought I'd discuss a song written by a local band - POW! Negro. Made up of six members, and led my Nelson Mondlane, in the two years they've been a band, they've won multiple awards, been featured in Rolling Stone Magazine and become a big part of the Perth/Fremantle music scene.

Something that makes them different to a lot of bands, as well as their interesting sound (a mix of jazz, hip-hop and rock), is their lyrics. The ones I'd like to talk about today, though, are the lyrics to their song, "Flesh Off The Bone."

"I’m entitled to dominance
Take everything I can touch
My satisfaction’s a must"

This song, which very much questions toxic masculinity and why it exists, as well as even tackling racism and stereotypes, starts off from the perspective of a man with a toxic level of masculinity. Through the lyrics, POW! emphasises just how ridiculous and harmful such a socially-pressured mindset is, causing any listener to think twice before making fun of a guy for crying or enjoying anything remotely "feminine."

"My brothers
Why is that we feel the need, when we go out
We have to fight each other?
Why is it
That we can’t respect the women in our lives as equals?"

See part two for the rest xx
